Mike Paul is a freelance illustrator, writer, and historian. He grew up outside of Kansas City, has moved around a bit over the years working as a history professor, an illustrator, and occasionally an editorial cartoonist, and now lives in the Washington, DC metro area. His history articles have appeared in the journals Kritika, Church History, The Journal of Military History, Russian History, Jahrbücher für Geschichte Osteuropas, and Orientalia Christiana Periodica; he has book chapters in The Clash of Cultures on the Medieval Baltic Frontier and Novgorod ou la Russie oubliée; his fiction articles are published in Satire and The Door; his editorial cartoons appeared in The Manhattan Mercury; and his illustrations graced the pages of Balloons Literary Journal and My Friend, just to name a couple.)
Mike loves history, especially medieval history and the history of Russia and, more recently, the history and cultures of East and Southeast Asia. He is especially fascinated by sharks, but also has a soft spot in his heart for garden slugs, rhinos, platypuses (platypi, platypodes?), sloths, pangolins, octopuses, foxes, songbirds, squirrels, cats and quite a few other critters and the habitats in which they live. He frequents museums, libraries, and national parks, and enjoys ukiyo-e prints and Italian High Renaissance art.
Mike is always looking for new and exciting writing and illustration opportunities and would love to collaborate with you. Please get in touch at mike@mikepaulart.com or click the “Contact” button in the menu.
